Curricular modernization by implementing MOOCs model

MODE IT

MODE IT was the acronym for the Erasmus+ project “Curricular modernisation through the implementation of the MOOC model”. Five higher education institutions from Germany, Lithuania, Turkey, Portugal and Romania formed a strategic partnership with the aim of introducing innovative MOOC-based approaches to the design and delivery of higher education courses. In other words: open pedagogy was integrated into formal education to make it more flexible and attractive to students.

This innovative approach by MODE IT contributed as follows:

  • raising students’ awareness of open learning formats with a view to their future careers,
  • enhancing students’ ability to engage in self-organised and self-directed learning.

The key drivers of innovation in the MODE IT approach were the university teaching staff. Therefore, the specific objectives of MODE IT were:

  • Raising awareness among teaching staff regarding their professional (self-)development;
  • Improving teaching staff’s skills in designing and delivering MOOCs and MOOC-based curricula;
  • to create and deliver MOOC-based modules within selected higher education curricula.

MODE IT outcomes:

  • an online self-assessment tool for higher education lecturers,
  • a training programme for higher education lecturers on the (re)design and delivery of MOOCs,
  • MOOC-based curricula for higher education.
