Mobile Learning Systems for Skills retention

MobiLEx

The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed digitalization even further into everyday life than before. The areas of work and learning are also affected - digital and virtual are here to stay. Vocational training also had to act quickly to convert face-to-face teaching to digital or hybrid models. Apart from the inadequate infrastructure that many institutions were confronted with, it was found that many teachers still have little experience with virtual teaching and digital formats and tools that can promote and support learning in the digital space. In recent months, some progress has already been made and teachers have been able to expand their knowledge. However, there is still a need for more digital tools that help to make lessons more interactive and, in particular, tools that are designed to consolidate what has already been learned.

Objectives and contents

The tools that already exist in the VET sector for distance learning are missing one important component: a mobile learning system that allows learners to use it and consolidate what they have learned, no matter when and where they are. To round it all off, there is another component that should not be missing: the ability to keep the mobile learning system up to date at all times.

This is where the two-year MobiLEx project came in as part of Erasmus+. The Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) and the partner organizations PAIZ Konsulting Sp. Z o.o. (Poland), MILITOS SYMVOULEUTIKI A.E. (Greece) and Finance & Banking, Associazione per lo Sviluppo Organizzativo e delle Risorse Umane (Italy) jointly implemented the innovative MobiLEx education project.

The aim of the project was to equip vocational training with learning implementation processes and digital tools that can supplement normal learning processes. The involvement of educators from the VET sector, who accompany and help shape the development process of the learning system, was central to this. MobiLEx has created a mobile learning platform with which learners can consolidate what they have learned, no matter when and where - i.e. on the move - and teachers can use a suitable editor to adapt the content to their lessons and control the learning process themselves.

Project results

As part of the MobiLEx project, a flexible, digital learning system was developed that can be used regardless of time, place and topic. At the same time, the MobiLex tool developed helps learners to transfer what they have learned in class into practice and thus to better internalize their knowledge. MobiLex consists of two components: an editor for the teacher and an app for the learners.
With the MobiLex mobile learning system, teachers can use the editor to create tailor-made tasks and exercises for preparation or follow-up work and control the learning process. Students access the tasks via the app and work on them at their own pace.
The final version of the editor and the app have been available since June 2023 and can be used free of charge by anyone interested:
